Incident Report Description

The ongoing matatu strike has paralysed trasportation activities in Kibera. The strike started today when matatu drivers refused to work in the morning hours.
Many matatus are not operating in Nairobi due to the strike. The strike had been planned by the Matatu Cooperation when the Government of Kenya imposed heavy fines to those who broke the road laws.
Hundreds of commuters were stranded along different bus terminals in Makina, Karanja, Olympic and the Ngummo bus terminals.
The gazetted laws say that:
Driving without a licence attracts a penalty as offenders will be jailed for 10 years or fined Sh500, 000 or both
Police say the harsh law is expected to reduce road accidents, which increase steadily during the festive season.
